Lasith Embuldeniya’s five-wicket haul and fellow spinner Ramesh Mendis’ four-wicket haul helped Sri Lanka bowl West Indies for 160 in the second innings on Thursday to register a resounding 187-run win in the first Test. West Indies, needing 348 runs to win, started their innings at 52 for six on the fifth and final day and their second innings was cut short after lunch. Embuldenia took five wickets for 46 runs in the innings, taking their total to six wickets in the match.

Mendis took four wickets for 64 runs to take a total of seven wickets in the match. Nkrumar Bonner and Joshua de Silva, who were on 18 for six, disappointed the Sri Lankan bowlers a bit. Both of them added 62 more runs in the morning session. But Embuldencia dismissed da Silva for 54 to end the 100-run partnership.

Bonner was the top scorer with an unbeaten 68 off 220 balls with seven fours. It was his third Test fifty. Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne was adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’ for his innings of 147 and 83 runs.
