Shubman Gill IND vs ZIM: Shubman Gill got emotional after breaking Sachin’s record, special gift sent to father from Zimbabwe

After missing out on his maiden century in the last several matches, Shubman Gill finally managed to score his maiden century while batting brilliantly. He played a brilliant innings of 130 runs in the third and final ODI against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club on Monday. It was on the basis of his innings that Team India made a 3-0 ODI series clean sweep against Zimbabwe.

After the match, Gill said, ‘Definitely this century is special for me. The batting was getting good on the pitch and so I converted it into a century after my half-century. Scoring a century is always special. I wanted to score a century after getting out for 90 three times. Gill hit four fours and a six in his 97-ball 130 and was the highest run-scorer for the Indian team.

On his batting strategy, Gill said, “I was just trying to reduce my dot-ball percentage. I tried to hit the ball on time and wasn’t thinking of hitting it too hard. It’s a big team of players and it feels good to be playing with them. In 1998, Gill became the highest run-scorer by an Indian batsman in an ODI in Zimbabwe, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 127 at Bulawayo.

Gill, who was adjudged player of the match, said he had to go through a phase where Zimbabwe’s bowlers were bowling exceptionally well. He said, ‘When I came on the field, some bowlers were bowling well. It was not easy to play against him. Once we were set up, we knew we were going to score runs at a fast pace. Raza, Evans were bowling well and it was important to attack the bowlers.

Gill dedicated his Player of the Series award to his father, saying that he scored 245 runs in three innings at an average of 122.5 and his second such award after the ODI series against West Indies to his father Lakhwinder Singh.
