Savita Poonia to captain Indian women’s team for Asian Champions Trophy

New Delhi: The Indian squad for the Women’s Hockey Asian Champions Trophy has been announced. Captain Rani Rampal has been rested and goalkeeper Savita Poonia will lead the 18-member Indian team. The tournament will be played from December 5 to 12 in Donggai, South Korea. India has to start the campaign from day one.

Note that China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia are also participating in the tournament. Savita, who has been named FIH’s best goalkeeper this year, will captain the tournament. Defender Deep Grace will be the only vice-captain. Tokyo Olympics forwards Lalremsiami and Sharmila Devi and midfielder Salima Tete are also out of the squad. All three are part of the junior team that will play in the FIH World Cup in South Africa from December 5.

Namita Topo and Lilima Minj have joined the team. Two-time Olympians Vandana Kataria and Navneet Kaur will lead the forward line. She is accompanied by Rajwinder Kaur, Mariana Kujur and Sonica in the team. Midfielders include Sushila Chanu, Pukhrambam, Nisha, Monica, Neha and Jyoti. Navjot Kaur and Suman Devi are substitutes and if any of the 18-member team is injured or injured, they will get a chance.
