Rohit, Gill practice nets at Leicestershire County ground

Leicester, June 20 (PTI) Indian cricketers, including skipper Rohit Sharma and opener Shubman Gill, practiced nets on Monday ahead of the fifth and final cricket Test against England in Birmingham from July 1.

Rohit and Gill are likely to open the innings for India in this Test match and both looked to hone their skills during a practice session at the Leicestershire County ground.

Rohit was rested for the home T20 International series against South Africa. He showed some defensive play on the front foot while also playing a pull shot on the short balls. Gill was also seen working on various aspects of his game during the batting session.

The Indian team will be here for a week and will play a four-day warm-up match against Leicestershire from June 24.

Rohit and KL Rahul played a key role in giving India a 2-1 lead in the Test series in England last year after the final match was called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Rahul will not be able to take part in the fifth Test being held now due to a groin injury. He was also ruled out of the home series against South Africa due to injury. In his absence, Gill is likely to open the innings.

Rohit scored 368 runs in four Tests with the help of a century and two half-centuries, while Rahul scored 315 runs with a century and a half-century.

Gill, who played a key role in India’s historic Test series win in 2020-21 on Australian soil, will be looking to make a mark on the UK tour.

During this match, Rohit will lead the Test team for the first time on foreign soil.

The Ben Stokes-led England side have been in fine form and have taken a 2-0 lead in the three-Test series at home against defending World Test champions New Zealand.

India has to play three T20 Internationals and the same number of One Day Internationals on the tour of England. The team will also play two warm-up matches against Derbyshire and Northamptonshire before the limited overs series.

Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja, who were not part of the squad for the series against South Africa, attended the first training session in England last week.
