Right time to make Pat Cummins captain: Warne

Melbourne, Nov 23 (PTI) Spin legend Shane Warne has backed Pat Cummins’ appointment as Australia’s next Test captain, saying the time has come for paceman Tim Paine to take over the responsibility.

Paine has stepped down as Test captain amid an investigation by Cricket Australia into sending obscene messages to a female colleague in 2017.

Warne believes that current vice-captain Cummins should be named captain ahead of the Ashes series.

He told Australia’s The Daily Telegraph, “I think this is the right time to make Pat Cummins the captain. I thought of this even before Penn resigned.

Cummins played the first Test for Australia in 2011 and has so far taken 164 wickets in 32 Tests.

Warne said, “This poster boy is loved and respected by people all over the world. Pat Cummins should be made captain. Matthew Wade, Josh Inglis or Alex Curry should be replaced in the Test team instead of Paine.

He said, “Inglis is my first choice as a wicketkeeper. He is a 360 degree player and has scored three centuries in first-class cricket last season. ,

Expressing sympathy for Penn, he said that he too is a human being and should not be judged on the basis of one incident.

“What happened is sad. I feel bad for him and his family,” he said. I will not judge him on the basis of this incident. Being in public life does not mean that he will not make mistakes. Players are also human beings and they also have emotions. Stop commenting, it’s not our job.
