Shreyas Iyer has started his Test career well. He returned unbeaten to the pavilion after scoring 75 runs on the first day of the Test match against New Zealand in Kanpur. Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman suggests that Iyer should make the most of this opportunity.
He said that once Virat Kohli returns for the second Test, Iyer’s place in the team may not be confirmed. Iyer, along with Ravindra Jadeja, has put India in a strong position on the first day.
Iyer and Jadeja shared an unbeaten 113-run partnership for the fifth wicket. By the end of the first day’s play, India had consolidated their position by scoring 258 for four.
Laxman said in a conversation with Star Sports, ‘I want him to make this Test memorable because once Virat Kohli returns there is no guarantee that he will be in the playing XI. So, hopefully he plays to his full potential and makes the most of it.
Iyer was handed over his Test cap by former Indian captain great batsman Sunil Gavaskar. On Thursday, Gavaskar handed the Test cap to Iyer in Kanpur.
Laxman said on this occasion, ‘Taking the Test cap from Sunil Gavaskar, what a great opportunity for Iyer. Growing up in Mumbai, Gavaskar must have been a role model for Iyer. Wearing a Test cap is a huge moment for any player representing India in Test cricket. I am sure it will be a beautiful moment for her.
