Now we have to win every match to reach playoffs: Warner

Mumbai, May 4 (PTI) Delhi Capitals opener David Warner on Wednesday said a few goalscoring errors have enabled his team to win every match to make it to the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs. And also keep an eye on the results of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Delhi currently have eight points from nine matches and are in seventh place. Now he has five matches left. Currently, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants are in a good position while the number four to ninth team have six to 10 points and the equation can change within two matches.

Warner said on the eve of the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, “From the position we are in now, we have to win every match to reach the playoffs. Competition is quite stiff. We have to play matches against two strong teams Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. These teams are also almost like us.

“If we beat Sunrisers, we can be in a better position in a sense. After that we will be in the top four but we also have to hope that RCB keep on losing their matches. There is a lot of fighting in the points table but I am very excited for the rest of the tournament.

Delhi failed to chase down the target in a few matches and Warner admitted that it was the team’s fault.

He said, “If you look at the results, I think we have been chasing big scores. We have managed to get very close to the target, but even then it is painful to lose the match by a very small margin.

Regarding the match against his former team Sunrisers, Warner said, “My thoughts are like every other match. Just go on with your work and prepare yourself for the match.

When Warner was asked about his form and experience opening the innings with Prithvi Sauv, he said, “We have started well. We got out cheaply in the last match. It happens often because you have to play high level cricket in the powerplays.

The Australian legend said that the role of the top three batsmen in the team will be very important.

Warner said, “I think the most important thing is whether I or he (Prithvi) or Mitch (Mitchell Marsh) can score 80 or 90 or even a century. Our role will be important while giving target to the opposition team or chasing a big target. I think other teams think the same way. Teams that are performing well, their top-order batsmen are making big scores.
