Novak Djokovic to face Andy Murray in Madrid Open third tour

Madrid Open: Signing a return to his best form, Novak Djokovic defeated Gael Monfils in straight sets to enter the third round of the Madrid Open tennis tournament where he will face Andy Murray. Djokovic called it his best performance of the year after beating Monfils 6-3, 6-2. The Serbian saved five break points while the Frenchman Monfils broke three times.

The top seed Djokovic said, ‘‘I look at it as possibly the best performance of the year. I really enjoyed being on the court. It was a great performance. I am very happy.’’ Three-time winner Djokovic will next face two-time champion Murray here in Madrid, who defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. 

Carlos Alcaraz of Spain continued his good run with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Nicolas Basilashvili. Earlier, Andre Rublev of Russia defeated Britain’s 20-year-old Jack Draper 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 to enter the third round. Marin Cilic defeated Albert Ramos Vinolas 6-3, 3-6, 6–4, while America’s Frances Tiafoe and Jenson Brooksby lost their first round matches in straight sets. Tiaffo was defeated by Cristian Garin 6-1, 6-3 and Brooksby was defeated by Roberto Bautista Agut 6-0, 6-2.
