Manchester United, Chelsea advance to Champions League, Barcelona will have to wait

Paris, Nov 24 (AP) Cristiano Ronaldo lived up to his laurels with a scintillating goal as Manchester United beat Villarreal 2-0 on Tuesday to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League football tournament.

However, Barcelona will have to wait for a place in the last 16. He played the match against Benfica in a goalless draw.

United are playing under interim coach Michael Carrick for the first time since the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last week. With Ronaldo’s brilliant effort, he managed to start off with a win.

Ronaldo scored in the 78th minute to give United the lead while Jadon Sancho scored in the 90th minute. This ensured United their top spot in Group F.

Ronaldo has so far scored in all five matches in the group and his total in the Champions League has reached 140, which is a record.

Another England team, Chelsea, defeated Juventus 4-0 to enter the knockout stage. Juventus had already qualified but suffered their biggest defeat in the Champions League.

Liverpool have already qualified and Manchester City are also likely to reach the last 16, with Premier League teams expected to be over-represented in the knockout stages.

Barcelona had made it to the knockout stage from their group every season for the past two decades, but due to a draw with Benfica, they now have to beat Bayern Munich in a final round match to advance. Barcelona’s coach is now former star player Jhavi Hernandez.

Meanwhile, in Group G, Lillee’s 1-0 win over Salzburg and Sevilla’s 2-0 win over Wolfsburg kept all four teams in the race to qualify. Lille top the group with eight points while Wolfsburg are fourth with five points.

Two teams from each group make it to the last 16.
