After Dhoni decided to step down from the captaincy last month, Chennai had named Jadeja as the captain, but the all-rounder could not bear the pressure of captaincy and in the end he gave up. In such a situation, Chennai had to hand over the captaincy again to its most trusted Dhoni.
Chennai lost six out of eight matches under Jadeja’s leadership. Meanwhile, the batting, bowling and fielding of the country’s most trusted all-rounder were also adversely affected.
After Dhoni took over, Chennai beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 13 runs in the first match to keep their hopes of reaching the playoffs alive.
Dhoni told reporters after the match, “Jadeja knew from last season that he has to captain this year. I helped him in the first two games but after that asked him to make his own decisions and take responsibility.
“Once you become the captain, there are many responsibilities attached to it. But he was impressed by the increasing responsibility. I think the burden of captaincy affected his preparation and performance.
Dhoni said that Jadeja’s taking over of the team was a gradual change as he wanted it to be.
“He knew and had enough time to prepare,” he said. The important thing is that you want him to lead the team and I wanted that change too. You don’t want him to feel at the end of the session that someone else has captained and he is limited to toss only.
Dhoni said, “So it was a gradual change. Giving suggestions in every situation doesn’t really help the captain. You have to take important decisions on the field and you have to take responsibility for them.
“Once you become the captain, you have to take care of many things and that includes your own game,” he said.
Dhoni is confident that Jadeja will be back in form once he is relieved of the responsibility of captaincy.
“If you do your best after being released from captaincy, that’s what we want as well,” he said. We were losing a brilliant fielder. We were missing a good fielder at deep midwicket. We have dropped 17-18 catches and it is a matter of concern.
Dhoni said, “The matches are very tough and hopefully we will come back strong. It is important to communicate with the bowlers.
