The first Test between India and New Zealand ended in a draw. New Zealand, who came into the ring with an overnight score of 4/1, were 165 for nine at the close of play. The Kiwis were the top scorer in the second innings with opener Tom Latham (52: 146 off three fours). However, the team started the fifth day better. First opener Tom Latham, one-down William Somerville (36: 110 off five fours), was unbeaten. Both added 76 runs for the second wicket.
William bowled the first ball of the second session to give Umesh Yadav a good break. After that the wickets continued to fall in a row. Ross Taylor (2:24), Henry Nichols (1: 4) and Tom Blundell (2:38) failed. Captain Kane Williamson (24: 112 off three fours) blocked the Indian bowlers for a while. However, he also came back for the sixth wicket. At the end, Indian batsman Rachin Ravindra (18 not out: 91 balls, two fours) and No. 11 Ajaz Patel (2 not out: 23 balls) blocked the wickets for nine overs. The match ended in a draw.
The day was completely dominated by spinners. The Kiwis lost only one of the nine wickets they lost in the fourth innings to the pacer. The remaining nine wickets were taken by spinners. Ravindra Jadeja took four wickets and Ashwin three. Akshar Patel and Umesh Yadav took four wickets each. The second Test between the two teams will take place on December 3.
