I was already told that I will bat in the upper order: Ashwin

Navi Mumbai, May 12 (PTI) Ravichandran Ashwin has been showing great prowess with his bowling in the current Indian Premier League season, thanks to his rigorous batting practice at the start of the season as Rajasthan Royals picked the off-spinner first. It was told that he can be sent in the top order.

Batting at number three, Ashwin scored 50 runs in 38 balls against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday, although his team had to face defeat in this match.

After the match, Ashwin told reporters, “Even before the session, I was told that as a batsman I would be sent up the order. We also played some practice matches in which I opened the innings.

The veteran off-spinner said, “I worked very hard on my batting and so it is good to see that I am getting the benefit of that.”

Regarding the practice he did before the IPL, Ashwin said, “I was in good batting mode even before the start of the season. I worked a little harder on my batting, changed my technique a little bit. It feels good to play a half-century but it didn’t help the team win.

Royals currently have 14 points from 12 matches and are in third place while Delhi are in fifth place with 12 points from the same number of matches.

Mitchell Marsh played an important role in Delhi’s victory. Marsh took two wickets for 25 runs in the first three overs and later played a blistering innings of 89 runs. Apart from him, David Warner scored 52 runs.

Marsh said, ‘The ball was swinging in the powerplay, so it was the toughest powerplay for me ever since I started playing T20 cricket.

He also praised his Australian teammate Warner.

Marsh said, “I love to bat with Davy (Warner). We have formed very good partnerships.
