Badminton Association of India (BAI) secretary Sanjay Mishra confirmed this to PTI on Thursday. The tournament starts in Bangkok from Sunday.
Gayatri pairs up with Trisa Jolly in the women’s doubles. The pair has been in great rhythm for quite some time now. The duo has made impressive performances in the international and domestic circuits.
She was also ruled out of the Asia Badminton Championships due to this injury.
The Indian women’s team’s troubles have worsened after Gayathri pulled out of the Uber Cup as the experienced pair of N Sikki Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa have already pulled out of the tournament. Sikki is out of the game due to stomach ache.
Following Sikki’s injury, the selectors included Simran Singh and Ritika Thakkar, ranked fourth in the rankings, in the 10-man squad during the selection trials. But Gayatri’s replacement is no longer possible as her injury came to light after the deadline for making any changes to the team was over.
Trisa left for Bangkok with the team on Wednesday after Gayatri pulled out of the tournament. Apart from Trisa, Tanisha Crasto, Shruti Mishra, Simran and Ritika are in the Indian team as doubles players.
The singles players in the team include PV Sindhu, Akarshi Kashyap, Ashmita Chaliha, Unnati Hooda.
India are in Group D along with South Korea, Canada and the US in the Uber Cup Finals.
Meanwhile, top 10 ranked HS Prannoy among men will also travel to Bangkok for the Thomas Cup finals after recovering from a ‘minor injury’.
