FIH Pro League of Indian men’s hockey team (FIH Hockey Pro League) The hopes of winning the title were shattered with a 1-2 loss against the Netherlands in the second match of the two-leg match on Sunday. India had lost 1-4 in the shoot-out against Netherlands in the first match on Saturday as well, while both the teams were tied 1-4 after 60 minutes of regular time. India needed to register a win against the Netherlands to retain their modest hopes of winning the title but it did not happen.
Netherlands won the Pro League title
Netherlands won the men’s title with 35 points from 14 matches while two matches are yet to be played. Olympic champion Belgium finished second with 35 points from 16 matches while India finished third with 30 points from 16 matches. India started the match brilliantly and took the lead within 30 seconds thanks to a field goal from Abhishek.
Abhishek took possession of the ball from the right end and after hitting four defenders, netted the goalkeeper Moritz Wieser, the Netherlands’ second-choice goalkeeper. The Netherlands, however, equalized in the seventh minute with a penalty corner from Zip Jensen. There was a tough competition between the world number three team Netherlands and fourth number team India. Netherlands got another penalty corner in the 11th minute which was thwarted by goalkeeper PR Sreejesh.
India could not take advantage of the penalty corner
The Netherlands got three more penalty corners but they failed to penetrate the Indian defence. Harmanpreet Singh failed to score a penalty corner for India in the 16th minute. India got two consecutive penalty corners two minutes before the interval but the team could not convert them into goals. In the third quarter, Jorit Kroon took the Netherlands 2-1 in the 45th minute. India got many chances to score after this but its players could not deceive the vicer.
Belgium lost in Pro League
Earlier, two goals from Alexandre Hendrix helped Belgium men’s team register a thrilling 3-2 win over India in the second leg of the two-leg FIH Pro League hockey tournament on Sunday. Hendrix (49th, 59th) scored two goals in the fourth quarter before Nicolas de Kerpel scored his team’s first goal in the 33rd minute. The Olympic champions had to face defeat 4-5 in the penalty shootout in the first leg match. In this match, the team was trailing 0-1 till the interval but they came back to register a spectacular victory.
