Following the brilliant bowling of left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht, South Africa’s Sunne Luce’s 21-ball 37 not out helped Velocity beat defending champions Supernova by five wickets in the first match of the Women’s T20 Cricket Challenge on Wednesday. Batting first, Supernovas were able to score 126 runs for eight wickets. In response, Velocity scored 129 runs for five wickets with one ball remaining. Luce scored an unbeaten 37-run knock off 21 balls with the help of four fours and a six and made the team win by hitting fours.
Earlier, Velocity had a poor start and their three batsmen were dismissed for 38 runs in the ninth over. Shefali Verma returned to the pavilion with 17 and captain Mithali Raj scoring seven. After this, Veda Krishnamurthy and Sushma Verma handled the innings. Veda scored 29 off 28 balls and Sushma scored 33 off 34 balls. Luce added 51 runs for the fifth wicket with Sushma after Veda was dismissed in the 13th over.
Earlier, apart from Bisht for Velocity, New Zealand off-spinner Le Kasparek took two for 23 and medium pacer Jahanara Alam took two wickets for 27 runs. Jahanara dismissed opposing captain Harmanpreet Kaur (31) and Chamara Attapattu (44). Sri Lanka’s T20 captain Atapattu and Indian captain Harmanpreet shared a 47-run partnership which was broken by Jahanara. His catch was caught by Veda Krishnamurthy on long on.
Jahanara also dismissed Harmanpreet who took a catch at short fine leg. After this, the defending champions lost four wickets within 15 runs. Chamari scored 44 off 39 balls which included two sixes and two fours while Harmanpreet hit two sixes and a four.
Earlier, Velocity spinners Le Kasparek and Ekta Bisht dismissed Priya Punia (11) and Jemima Rodriguez (seven). Chamari fell six runs behind his half-century. He pushed Managli into the cover and Kasparek six in deep midwicket to advance the rung.
