Five cricketers, including Will Pukowski and Cameron Green, have been given a chance to make their Test debut for the four-match Test series against India starting on 17 December. Other new faces in the Tim Paine-led squad include fast bowler Sean Abbott, leg-spinner Mitchell Swapson and all-rounder Michael Nasser. Phil Hughes was hurt by the ball of Abbott during the 2014 Sheffield Shield tournament, which led to his death.
Cricket Australia said that all these players have been rewarded for their outstanding performance in domestic cricket. Cricket Australia national selector Trevor Hons said that his performance in the Sheffield Shield has affected a lot. They have all played for Australia in other formats.
The Australian team will look to win the Border-Gawaskar trophy again, which they lost in 2018-19. The three-match ODI series will begin from November 27, after which three T20 matches will be played. The selectors also announced the 19-member Australia-A team which has nine members from the Test team. It will play a practice match against India.
Recently, veteran players from Australia sought to include Pukowski in the squad which scored two consecutive double centuries in two matches in the Sheffield Shield. He can open the innings with David Warner. He caught the attention of the selectors by scoring 495 runs in the first round matches at an average of 247.50.
