Man-eating lion kills 8-year-old girl sleeping in a field, creates fear in village

Rajkot: An eight-year-old girl was abducted by a lion from a village in Amreli district early Friday morning. The incident took place in Gordka village of Savarkundla taluka, where wild animals like lions and pangolins are present. The victim Sangeeta Bhuria was sleeping in an open field with her relatives. The lion is suspected to have arrived at 4 a.m. and dragged the girl.

Surprisingly, no one from Sangeetha’s family was aware of the attack and the body was found when they searched it in the morning.

According to Forest Department sources, the lion had eaten 80 per cent of the girl’s body and arrears had spread throughout the area where only the girl’s head and one arm were found. The department concluded that the girl had been picked up by a lion when steps were taken nearby and some eyewitnesses also confirmed the movement of lions in the area for the last two days.

Talking to our correspondent Times of India, Anshuman Sharma, (former) deputy conservator of Gir forest, said, “In the morning when the family members could not find the girl, they were searching and found body parts a few meters away from the farm. The forest department has set up cages to catch the lions. Sources in the department suspected that the family may have eaten fish or meat last night and the smell of the rest of the food may have attracted the lion.
