From 63 days to 50 years… know which Mughal rulers ruled for a long time

The Mughals ruled India for more than 300 years. Babur established the Mughal Empire in the country. Son Humayun lost that sultanate to Sher Shah Suri, but regained it after a decade and a half. There were some emperors in the history of Mughals who became the most popular. Akbar, Shahjahan and Aurangzeb were most recorded in history. While public opinion was positive for Akbar, Aurangzeb was called the cruelest Mughal emperor in history.

Know when the Mughal Empire was established and which rulers ruled the longest and shortest period in history.

  1. Babur (4 years and 250 days): The most interesting thing in history has been that the emperor who laid the foundation of Mughal rule in India ruled only for 4 years and 250 days. Babur ruled from 20 April 1526 to 26 December 1530 till his last breath. He was the first Mughal emperor who wrote his own autobiography. Usually things were exaggerated in the autobiographies of the Mughals, but Babur wrote openly about his failures.
  2. Emperor Humayun (10 years): Emperor Humayun was the second emperor of the Mughal Empire. He ruled from 26 December 1530 to 17 May 1540 and again from 22 June 555 to 27 January 1556. He lost the Mughal Empire after his defeat by Sher Shah Suri but regained it after 15 years. Humayan was the son of Babur who formed the Mughal Empire in India. Babur had declared Humayun as his successor. Humayun’s coronation took place on 30 December 1530 after the death of Emperor Babur.
  3. Emperor Akbar (49 years 9 months): Emperor Akbar was the third Mughal emperor. He ruled the Mughal Sultanate from February 11, 1556 to October 27, 1605. During the period of Akbar, the empire, wealth, political influence and military capability of the Mughals increased. After the death of father Humayun, Bairam Khan, who was his army commander, took over the empire and later made him sit on the Mughal throne.
  4. Jahangir (21 years 11 months 23 days): Jahangir was the fourth Mughal emperor, who ruled from 3 November 1605 to 28 October 1627. According to historians, Jahangir loved alcohol. However, the reign retained the empire and expanded its borders. His reign was mostly remembered for the exploits of his favorite wife, Nur Jahan.
  5. Emperor Shah Jahan (30 years, 8 months): Shah Jahan was the 5th emperor of the Mughal Empire. Who ruled from 19 January 1628 to 31 July 1658. Most of the construction works were done during the period of Shah Jahan. Many historical construction works were done including Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Moti Masjid, Jama Masjid and Agra Fort. After the death of Mumtaz Mahal, in his sorrow, Shah Jahan kept distance from the society and the empire.
  6. Aurangzeb (48 years 7 months): Aurangzeb was the sixth emperor of the Mughal Empire who ruled from July 31, 1658 until his death on March 3, 1707. Aurangzeb is considered the last effective Mughal ruler of the empire. The emperor imprisoned his father Shah Jahan and got his brother Dara Shikoh murdered. In this way he became the Mughal emperor. He implemented Sharia and Islamic law throughout South Asia. Also collected Jizya tax from non-Muslims.
  7. Bahadur Shah I (4 years, 253 days): Bahadur Shah I was the eighth Mughal emperor, who ruled from 19 June 1707 to 27 February 1712 till his last breath. Bahadur Shah I was also known as ‘Shah Alam I’ or ‘Alamshah I’.
  8. Muhammad Shah (28 years, 212 days): Muhammad Shah was the 13th emperor for the Mughals. He took over the empire at the age of 16 and ruled from 27 September 1719 to 26 April 1748. Delhi became a center of scholars, religious poets, painters, musicians and dancers during the Shah’s reign. The rumor of his being impotent was spread during the rule of Muhammad Shah Rangila. To prove him wrong, Muhammad Shah had a painting made, in which he was shown having a relationship with a maidservant.
  9. Ahmed Shah Bahadur (6 years, 37 days): Ahmad Shah Bahadur was the 14th Mughal emperor. Father Emperor Muhammad Shah made him sit on the throne in 1748 at the age of 22. He ruled from April 29, 1748 to June 2, 1754.
  10. Alamgir II (5 years, 180 days): Alamgir II was the 15th Mughal emperor, who ruled from 3 June 1754 to 29 November 1759. He was the son of Jahandar Shah and proved to be a weak ruler with all authority in the hands of his vizier, Imad-ul-Mulk, who eventually had him assassinated.
  11. Shah Alam II (45 years, 339 days): Alamgir II’s son Shah Alam II was the 17th Mughal emperor. He became the Mughal emperor at a time when the Sultanate had started to collapse. The empire was getting weaker. The Mughals started losing their influence. Shah Alam ruled in two phases. First from October 10, 1760 to July 31, 1788 and again from October 16, 1788 to November 19, 1806.
  12. Akbar Shah II (30 years, 321 days): Akbar Shah is known as Akbar II. He was the second son of Shah Alam II and father of Bahadur Shah II. He ruled from 19 November 1806 to 28 September 1837. This was the period when India was ruled by the British. Due to increasing British influence, his status had reduced to a great extent.
  13. Farrukhsiyar (6 years, 48 ​​days): Farrukhsiyar became the 10th Mughal emperor from January 11, 1713 to February 28, 1719, after assassinating his uncle and Emperor Jahandar Shah. They did not have the ability and knowledge to rule independently. Historians say that he was an emperor in name only.
  14. Shah Jahan IV (63 days): Shah Jahan IV became the Mughal emperor for a short time in 1788 succeeding Shah Alam II. He sat on the throne from July 31, 1788 to October 11, 1788. He was the shortest reigning emperor in Mughal history.
  15. Bahadur Shah Zafar (19 years, 360 days): Bahadur Shah II was the 20th and last Mughal emperor of India. In his time, the Mughal Empire was left only in name. His authority was limited only to the walled city of Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad). Following his participation in the 1857 rebellion, the British exiled him to Rangoon in 1858 after being convicted on several charges.
