Aurangabad:Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Abdul Sattar has said that farmers’ suicide is not a new thing. Such incidents have been happening for many years. Abdul Sattar said this in response to a question about farmers committing suicide in his constituency Sillod in Aurangabad district. Abdul Sattar said, ‘The issue of farmers committing suicide is not a new one. Such incidents have been happening for many years. I believe that there should not be incidents of farmer suicides anywhere in Maharashtra including my constituency. Abdul Sattar is a member of the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. However, the statement of Abdul Sattar has increased the difficulties of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. There was a lot of uproar in the House regarding Sattar’s statement.

According to the police, at least two farmers committed suicide in Sillod between March 3 and 12. However, sources have claimed that at least six farmers have committed suicide in Aurangabad district of Marathwada region during the same period. Prima facie it appears that farmers have committed suicide due to debt problem. He said that a committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Agriculture Commissioner to look into the cases of farmer suicides.
