Indore Collector Ilaiah Raja T told Navbharat Times at the spot that we have identified 35 bodies and sent them to the hospital for postmortem. There is a possibility of another dead body in the foothills of Bawdi. He said that 16 people injured in the accident have been admitted to the hospital. Two other persons were sent home after first aid. The collector said that one of the missing persons, which was received by the administration, has not been traced so far and they are being searched inside the stepwell.

19 hours rescue operation continues
Rescue operation is going on for the last 19 hours at Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal Temple located in Juni Indore police station area of Indore. A total of 35 bodies were recovered till Friday morning. At the same time, the possibility of more people being trapped in the well is being expressed. From 12 o’clock in the night, the army took charge of the rescue operation. Within 5 hours, the army took out 21 dead bodies. All the dead were sent to MY Hospital, where their postmortem was done in the night itself.

Officials said that the rescue work was hampered due to the narrow space of the temple. During this, a pipe was inserted inside the temple by breaking a wall and the water of the stepwell was pulled out with a motor. An eyewitness told that during the religious program there was a huge crowd of devotees on the roof of the old stepwell in the temple and the roof could not bear the burden of more people. Kantibhai Patel, president of the Patel Nagar Residents Union, expressed displeasure over the fact that even after being informed about the accident, the ambulance did not reach the spot for an hour.
Indore District Magistrate Dr. T. Ilaiyaraaja told on Thursday that rescue operation was started with the help of SDRF soon after the accident. Around 20 people were rescued. The District Magistrate said that the administration will identify such public places where such accidents are likely to happen.
