Three out of every four Indians suffer from vitamin D deficiency. A recent survey found that about 76 percent of people suffer from vitamin D deficiency. This deficiency is more common in young people below 25 years of age. It means that most of the people are spending their time indoors without sunlight. But experts suggest that the body should be exposed to the sun for at least 10 minutes as it may cause health problems. It is said that it is better to stand outdoors early in the morning, have coffee or tea, read newspaper and walk.

How much is needed?
Children and adolescents should take 600 IU or 15 micrograms. Adults up to the age of 70 years should take 800 IU or 20 micrograms. Pregnant and lactating women also need 600 IU or 15 micrograms of vitamin D. Those who take it in the form of supplements should take only one per week as per the doctor’s recommendation. Otherwise health problems will occur.
