Why did the Aam Aadmi Party lose in the by-election in Sangrur seat? MP Raghav Chadha told the reason

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a major setback in the by-polls to Sangrur Lok Sabha seat. Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) candidate Simranjit Singh Mann, 77, has won this seat. ‘AAP’ had fielded Sangrur district president Gurmel Singh. AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has blamed the fall in the vote share of other political parties, including Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP, for the defeat.

AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has blamed the fall in the vote share of other political parties, including Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP, for his party’s defeat in the Sangrur bypoll. He says that the defeat of others has become an advantage for the winning candidate Simranjit Mann.

Raghav Chadha, who played a key role in AAP’s resounding victory in the Punjab Assembly elections held earlier this year, said on Twitter that though AAP lost the seat, it saw its vote share marginally drop from 37 per cent to 35 per cent. But retained.

Chadha, the Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, tweeted, “With all humility we accept the mandate of Sangrur. We will work harder. Akali Dal fell from 24% to 6%, Congress from 27% to 11%, AAP from 37% to 35%. The vote of the rest of the parties went to Simranjit Singh. Punjab wiped out other parties.

The uneasy defeat for the AAP comes just three months after the party’s unilateral victory in the Punjab Assembly elections. The Sangrur seat was vacated by Bhagwat Mann after becoming the Chief Minister of Punjab. The election was a battle of prestige for both the ruling AAP and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in Punjab. Bhagwant Mann had won from the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat in 2014 and 2019 but resigned from the Lok Sabha after being elected as the MLA from Dhuri and later the Chief Minister. In the Punjab Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party won 92 seats in the 117-member assembly.

Simranjit Singh Mann (77) returned to Parliament after nearly two decades, defeating his nearest rival and state’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Gurmel Singh by 5,822 votes. According to official figures, Simranjit Singh Mann got 2,53,154 votes while Gurmel Singh got 2,47,332 votes.
