Differences have also surfaced among opposition parties over the Vice Presidential election as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress announced to abstain from the voting process, citing attempts to not reach a consensus before the announcement of Alva’s name. Alva, 80, is a senior Congress leader and has also served as the Governor of Rajasthan. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) have announced their support for Alva. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has also supported Alva. Looking at the support of the parties that Alva has got so far, it is being estimated that he can get close to 200 votes.

Jagdeep Dhankhar is 71 years old and belongs to the influential Jat community of Rajasthan. His background has been socialist. Janata Dal (United), YSR Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party, AIADMK and Shiv Sena have declared their support for Dhankhar and with their support the NDA candidate is expected to get close to 515 votes.

Alva made this appeal before voting

A day before the polls, Alva said in a video message, “If the functioning of Parliament is to be effective, MPs have to find ways to build trust between each other and restore broken dialogue.” Ultimately it is the MPs who determine the character of our Parliament. “The time has come for all parties to come together to build trust between each other and restore the dignity of Parliament,” he said.

On Thursday, the opposition parties gathered at the dinner

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday hosted a dinner for MPs from all parties who supported Alva. Dhankhar met BJP MPs at his residence on Friday. These included Sushil Kumar Modi, Gautam Gambhir, Rajyavardhan Rathod, Rajendra Agarwal. Voting will be held in Parliament House from 10 am to 5 pm. Soon after that the votes will be counted and by late evening the name of the new Vice President of the country will be announced by the Returning Officer.

Venkaiah Naidu’s term ending on August 10

M Venkaiah Naidu’s term as Vice President ends on August 10 and the new Vice President will take oath on August 11. All the members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are included in the electoral college for the Vice-President’s election. Nominated members are also eligible to vote in this. The current strength of the Parliament is 788, of which only BJP has 394 MPs. More than 390 votes are required to win.

Dhankhar and Om Birla belong to the same state

If Dhankhar is elected Vice-President, it will be a coincidence that the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha will be from the same state. Currently Om Birla is the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and he represents the Kota parliamentary constituency of Rajasthan. The Vice President is also the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
