Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister R Dorikannu, who was battling Kovid-19, died in a private hospital. After being transferred from a government medical college hospital in Villapuram on October 13, Dorikannu was undergoing treatment here where he was admitted after complaining of restlessness. Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit expressed grief over the death of Dorikannu and said that he was saddened to learn about the demise of the minister. Paying tribute, the governor said, Dorikkannu was “known for his simplicity, humility, straightforwardness, governance skills and commitment to the welfare of the farming community …” He took over the Ministry of Agriculture with complete dedication. His untimely demise is an irreparable loss to the people of Tamil Nadu and especially to the AIADMK party. “
Governor Banwarilal Purohit expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved members of the family and said that he prayed to Almighty God to give peace to his soul. Dorikannu was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Papanasam in Thanjavur district in 2006, 2011 and 2016, with the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa joining him in the cabinet in 2016. The minister’s health had suffered a major decline last Sunday. The hospital said on Monday that the minister had severe COVID pneumonia and was being treated for its complications.

A CT scan revealed that more than 90 percent of his lungs had been afflicted and put on a ventilator. On October 13, while going to the funeral of Chief Minister K Palaniswamy’s mother, he had some discomfort and discomfort. Dorikkannu, who was traveling in his car, was taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Villupuram and transferred to Cauvery Hospital the same day.
