Shelly Oberoi was mayor for 37 days, know why the mayor election is going to be held again in Delhi?

Delhi MCD News: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi elected its mayor on 22 February after three unsuccessful attempts to hold elections. On the other hand, a day earlier i.e. on March 31, the tenure of Mayor Shelly Oberoi and Deputy Mayor Iqbal of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has come to an end. In such a situation, once again the uproar has started in the political corridors of Delhi regarding the election of the new Mayor. However, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi will continue in their posts till the elections are held. At the same time, Delhi’s LG Vinay Saxena has to decide when the MCD elections will be held. Let us tell you that the elections for the mayor and deputy mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi are held in April. In such a situation, the election process is likely to start next week. In such a situation, questions are arising in the minds of the people that why the mayor’s election is being held once again in Delhi?

Let us tell you that according to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, mayor, deputy mayor and a 6-member standing committee are elected every time in the session of the corporation starting from April 1. For this reason, Shelly Oberoi remained mayor for only 38 days. The reason behind this is the delayed MCD elections and then the postponement of the mayor’s election due to uproar in the house thrice. Actually, according to the MCD Act, the year of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi starts from the first day of the month of April. Thus the year ends on 31st March next year.

The process is expected to begin as soon as the mayor’s office decides on the date. The proposal for election will be sent to the Municipal Commissioner’s office and it will be forwarded to the State Urban Development Department. Next it will reach the Lieutenant Governor, who will appoint the Presiding Officer. Significantly, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is likely to field sitting mayor Shelly Oberoi for a second term. Hence the question arises as to who will be the presiding officer, because as per the law, the mayoral candidate cannot be the presiding officer. The lieutenant governor will call a presiding officer. Significantly, the post of mayor is reserved for women in the first year and for the general category in the second year. In fact, as per the MCD Act, a woman candidate will be appointed as the mayor in the first year itself. In the second year general candidate will be there and third year will be given to SC candidate. The fourth and fifth years will again be general candidates.
