Zhao called Pelosi America’s third biggest political figure. He added that a visit by Pelosi to Taiwan “will cause serious political ramifications.” He said, “The One-China principle is the cause of peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits. China announces to conduct military exercises near Taiwan

Earlier, China announced that it was conducting military exercises on its coast near Taiwan on Saturday. An official told state-run Xinhua news agency that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), a military wing of the ruling Communist Party, was carrying out a “live fire exercise” from around 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. near Pington Island in Fujian province.

Cannons are usually used in such maneuvers. However, China did not clarify whether missiles, fighter jets and other weapons could be used in Saturday’s exercise. The Chinese official said the Maritime Security Administration has warned ships to avoid entering the area.

If Pelosi visits Taiwan, it will be the first visit by a top US elected representative to the island country since 1997. Chinese President Xi Jinping, in a phone conversation with his US counterpart Joe Biden on Thursday, warned of any “foreign interference” in China’s handling of Taiwan.

China said that Taiwan has no right to establish foreign relations. It said it sees the US leader’s visit as a move to encourage Taiwan to make official its nearly independent status for decades.
