NCP will support BJP’s ally Rio government in Nagaland, Sharad Pawar’s decision intensifies political movement

A major political development was witnessed on the day of Holi. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has decided that his party will not play the role of opposition in Nagaland. Pawar accepted the leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in the state, where the BJP is an ally of the NDPP. However, it is not yet clear whether the NCP will be part of the government or will only support the Rio government from outside.

Politically this is an important development. This is likely to have an impact on politics in Maharashtra, where the NCP is in alliance with the Congress and the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena. According to Pawar’s party, the move was taken following the opinion of the Nagaland unit of the NCP and the party’s winning 7 MLAs to support the government in the “larger interest of the state”. The party’s national general secretary and Northeast in-charge Narendra Verma said the party was considering moving a proposal for the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Nagaland Assembly. However, the final decision was left to Sharad Pawar. Pawar on Tuesday decided to accept the leadership of N Rio after listening to the North East in-charge.

NCP Legislature Party leader and team approved

P Longon as Deputy Leader of NCP Legislature Party, Namri Nchang as Chief Whip, Y Mhonbemo Hamtso as Whip and S. Toiho Yeptho was elected. Pawar also approved the proposed list of the NCP Legislature Party leader and his team on Wednesday.

Neiphiu Rio became Chief Minister for the fifth time.

Neiphiu Rio has become the Chief Minister for the fifth time in Nagaland. Rio’s party, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, won the maximum 25 seats in the 60-member assembly. And the ally BJP won 12 seats. Even though one party may not have got majority in Nagaland, NDPP and BJP had an alliance since before the elections. This alliance secured 37 seats, which was enough to easily form the government. In this way, Neiphiu Rio has become the longest serving Chief Minister of Nagaland. After him SC Jamir ruled thrice.
