MS Dhoni Record: Butler did what De Villiers could not do, broke Dhoni’s 17-year-old record

England’s star wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler is going through the best phase of his career. He also maintained his form in international cricket after scoring 863 runs in the 15th season of the IPL. Buttler scored 248 runs in the three-match ODI series against the Netherlands. During this, he hit a total of 19 sixes. Butler hit a century and a half-century. England won the series 3-0.

Butler broke the record held by former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni by hitting 19 sixes in the series. Butler became the wicketkeeper-batsman with the most number of sixes in a series. Dhoni had made explosive batting as a wicketkeeper 17 years ago in the series against Sri Lanka in 2005. He had hit 17 sixes.

Dhoni hit 17 sixes in seven matches

Dhoni had hit 17 sixes in five innings of seven matches. In the third match of the same series, he played the best innings of his career. Mahi played an unbeaten 183 in Jaipur. Dhoni took 145 balls in that match. He hit 15 fours and 10 sixes. Butler overtook Dhoni in the three-match series itself.

De Villiers had reached close to Dhoni

After 10 years in 2015, former South African wicketkeeper AB de Villiers had reached close to breaking Dhoni’s record. He hit 16 sixes against West Indies in 2015. Had he hit two more sixes, de Villiers would have broken Dhoni’s record. Butler is also in fourth place in this case. Butler hit 14 sixes in 2019 against West Indies.

Still on top Chris Gayle

If we look at the overall record, then West Indies’ stormy opener Chris Gayle is on top. He has hit 39 sixes in an ODI series. Gayle made this record in the ODI series against England in 2018-19.
