Congress Presidential Election: Before the start of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, there was talk of making a person outside the Gandhi family as Congress President, then two names came up in this meeting. The name belonged to Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge. The Gandhi family also agreed on these names. But, Gehlot became the first choice of the Congress President for the post. Kharge’s name was finally decided after internal turmoil in the party.
There were many reasons for this. The first was that the party wanted to hand over the post of president to a North India and Hindi-speaking leader. Along with this, Ashok Gehlot is also an OBC leader. At the same time, the demand of Sachin Pilot to become the Chief Minister was also being fulfilled by making Gehlot the president. So Gehlot was prepared to contest the elections. Gehlot also announced to contest the elections.
The picture changed due to the political ruckus of Rajasthan
The picture changed with the developments surrounding the Congress Legislature Party meeting in Rajasthan. Sources say that the party leadership instructed the observers who went to Jaipur to keep the chief minister away from the entire development. The observers gave a clean chit to Ashok Gehlot in their report. But Gehlot reached Delhi and refused to contest the election of the President.
Digvijay’s leaf cut because of being from a forward caste?
After this the search for a new candidate for the post of President started. After Digvijay Singh entered the fray, party leaders explained to Sonia Gandhi that the core vote bank of the Congress was Dalit. While the rest of the claimants including Digvijay Singh belong to the upper caste. Making a Dalit leader the President will send a positive message to the Dalit and Mahadalit voters across the country.
Kharge’s name was decided after talking to Rahul Gandhi
The names of Mallikarjun Kharge, Mukul Wasnik, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Kumari Selja were considered for the post of Congress President. Due to the age of Kharge and Shinde, Mukul Wasnik was discussed. Ashok Gehlot was given the responsibility of talking to Wasnik. There was a meeting of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, AK Antony and KC Venugopal late on Thursday night. Discussion was also held with Rahul Gandhi and Kharge’s name was decided. After this, on Friday, KC Venugopal talked to all the senior leaders of the party and agreed on the name of Mallikarjun Kharge. One of the reasons behind this was that even the leaders of the dissident faction had no objection in the name of Kharge. At the same time, Wasnik has been involved in the dissident faction. In such a situation, the party high command did not have much faith in Wasnik’s loyalty.
The making of Kharge as the presidential candidate is also being linked to the party’s expectation from South India. The entire focus of the party is on South India. Bharat Jodi Yatra is also passing through the southern states. Kharge is from Karnataka and Karnataka has assembly elections next year. The party is confident that Kharge’s becoming the president will get electoral benefits in the state.
