Kurmi adamant on the demand for ST status; Sitting on railway track, movement of many trains stopped

People of Kurmi community in West Bengal are demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Due to this, they sat on the railway tracks on Tuesday and stopped the movement of trains. It is being told that the movement of vehicles has also been stopped on a national highway.

According to a railway official, there is a lot of agitation in Adra and Kharagpur divisions of South Eastern Railway. Train services were partially affected due to the increasing agitation. He said that the agitators sat on railway tracks in Nimdih and Kastaur of Adra division and Khemasuli in Kharagpur division from 5 am, affecting the movement of passenger and goods trains.

According to media reports, the railways has stopped the services of three trains for today. These include train number 03598 Asansol-Ranchi MEMU passenger, train number 08641Adra-Barkakana MEMU passenger and train number 18036 Hatia-Kharagpur Express train service. Apart from this, train number 18035 Kharagpur-Hatia Express will have partial termination at Adra station today.

National Highway was also blocked

A state government official said the agitators also blocked a national highway in Purulia. Due to this people had to face problems in traffic. It is known that the people of the agitating Kurmi community are also demanding constitutional status for their local language.
