Who is Amritpal Singh: “I will believe in the constitution when they believe in my identity. I am not an Indian, I am a Punjabi. We want the entire area where Punjab was ruled earlier, first we will take it from India, and then we will also go to Pakistan ” This is one of the statements that a Sikh man named Amritpal Singh Khalsa has given in front of the media in the last five days. This person is being called Khalistan leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale 2.0. While others claim that it was erected intentionally. However, at present Amritpal Singh has been arrested.

Amritpal Singh Khalsa, 29, who sought to separate from India and create Khalistan for the people of Sikh religion, was not even a complete Sikh until six months ago. He used to cut his hair earlier. Today he is the head of ‘Waris Punjab De’, an organization demanding Khalistan. Its other demands include drug-free Punjab and Sikh sovereignty. Who is Amritpal Singh? Who is Amritpal Singh?

Amritpal Singh’s name appeared in the mainstream media on 23 February when he, along with thousands of Sikhs, stormed the police station to free Lovepreet ‘Toofan’, one of his comrades in Ajnala Jail. However, he had entered the politics of Punjab much earlier. On 19 August 2022, he started making organization even before coming to India from Dubai.

‘Waris Punjab De’ organization started during farmer’s movement

Amritpal Singh used to run his family’s motor business in Dubai. He was born in the year 1993 in Jallupur Kheda village of Amritsar. After doing 12th in 2012, he went to Dubai. Amritpal Singh is currently the head of ‘Waris Punjab De’ organization. This organization was started by actor-activist Deep Singh Sidhu during the farmer’s movement. Sidhu is the same person who hoisted the ‘Nishan Sahib’ at the Red Fort on 26 January. At that time Sidhu had said, “I did not cry so much when my father died as I cried when the Nishan Sahib was hoisted on the Red Fort.”

Sidhu also sought votes for Shiromani Akali Dal (A) candidate Simarjit Singh Mann (currently MP from Sangrur), who is pro-Khalistan, in the Punjab Assembly elections. Sidhu died in a car accident in February 2022, five days before the assembly elections. Amritpal Singh’s supporters say that Sidhu was ‘murdered’. Amritpal Singh had never met Sidhu but there was a conversation between him on social media during the farmer’s movement. A week ago, on Sidhu’s death anniversary, Amritpal Singh had said that he had stopped cutting hair from November 2021 on Sidhu’s advice.

On September 25, 2022, Amritpal Singh participated in the process of becoming an Amritdhari Sikh along with around 900 others at Anandpur Sahib. On 29 September thousands of Sikhs gathered at Bhindranwale’s village Rode and participated in Amritpal Singh’s Dastarbandi. Even while living in Dubai, Amritpal Singh remained vocal about Punjabi sovereignty, drug addiction in Punjab, farmer’s movement etc through Facebook and other social media platforms. He had described Sidhu as influential many times, but according to some media reports, Sidhu’s family has distanced himself from Amritpal Singh.

About 10 days ago, Home Minister Amit Shah had said that he and his government would root out the Khalistan movement. Citing a 2006 Supreme Court decision, Amritpal Singh said that speaking peacefully in favor of Khalistan is not a crime. Referring to Indira Gandhi, Amritpal Singh also said that what Amit Shah had said was what Indira Gandhi had said and the result could be the same for her. Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards in 1984. Amritpal Singh had asked Amit Shah to say the same thing to those demanding Hindu Rashtra.

Sikh organizations opposed Amritpal Singh

Amritpal Singh captured the police station using the sacred image of Sri Guru Granth Sahib as a shield and the policemen were wounded with swords by his supporters. There is a lot of anger in Sikh organizations regarding this. Now after the displeasure of well-known Sikh organizations and the Punjab government, Amritpal Singh’s difficulties will increase. Shri Akal Takht Sahib is the highest religious institution of the Sikhs. His silence on the Ajnala incident has been broken and Takht Sahib has formed a special committee to investigate the entire episode.

Will the demand for Khalistan intensify in Punjab?

The bloodshed that Punjab witnessed 30-35 years ago in the name of Khalistan has not ended yet. However, the state is largely peaceful. The demand for Khalistan was being raised again and again. But after the Ajnala incident it took hold. Many also claim that Amritpal Singh has been set up by BJP to take his help in telling the country that Khalistani are coming and strengthening their Hindutva agenda. Questions are being raised on the Punjab Police, Administration and the Aam Aadmi Party government, which is shying away from taking strict steps in the Ajnala incident. However, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has said that Amritpal Singh is getting funding from abroad and Pakistan.
