Regarding the Bharat Jodo Yatra of the Congress, the famous historian Ramchandra Guha has said that the purpose will not be fulfilled only by this. He said that if the Congress has to strengthen democracy, nothing will happen just by taking out marches, but votes will also have to be won. He said that it is necessary to strengthen the Congress to revive healthy democracy in the country. He said that this would not be done only by taking out marches but by getting votes. “A healthy democracy, with no one party running the opposition, is what India has seen since the late 1970s till 2014,” Guha said at the launch of the third edition of his book ‘India After Gandhi’ here.
To buttress his point, Guha pointed out that among all other parties, it was the Congress which gave the BJP a head-to-head fight on 191 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Ramachandra Guha said that we can understand the influence of Congress from the fact that it is the number one or second party in 8 to 12 states of the country. Guha said the same would happen in the 2024 general elections. He said that parties like JDU, Aam Aadmi Party, DMK and TMC are not comparable to BJP in states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh.
Will Congress get benefit from parties like NCP, Shiv Sena
Guha said that in 2019, the Congress had fought the BJP on 191 seats, out of which it had won only 16. His success rate in this way was only 8 percent. If it had got support from the coalition parties, then Congress could have won. But the Congress was seen fighting alone. He said that this time Congress can get support of RJD and JDU in Bihar. NCP and Shiv Sena can come together in Maharashtra. DMK can get support in Tamil Nadu. But in the end, the Congress itself has to be strong so that it can give a fight to the BJP.
Rahuli’s image is not that of a capable leader, but a good man
Regarding Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, Guha said that the goal will not be achieved only by taking out marches. He said that to keep the Congress alive, it is necessary to get votes. He said that a lot depends on how they revive themselves, but this will not be possible just by taking out marches. Votes are also needed for this. Regarding Rahul’s image, Guha said that he is a good man, but has not been able to create an image of a capable leader.
