285 government run schools in Himachal Pradesh have been closed. This is because not a single student has taken admission in these schools. Now the state government has denotified these government schools with zero enrollment. These include 57 middle and 228 primary schools. In Shimla district, 28 middle schools and 56 primary schools have been closed.
Education Department Secretary Abhishek Jain has issued a notification to denotify these schools on Friday. On finding zero enrollment in these schools in the report of the education department, the state government has decided to close them. The closure of these schools was approved in the state cabinet meeting held recently.
According to the new criteria of the Education Department, it is mandatory to have at least 10 children in the primary school. Apart from this, to keep the middle school functional, this number has been kept at least 15 students and 20 for the high school. Whereas in Senior Secondary School it is necessary to have at least 25 students.
In fact, after assuming power, the Congress government had ordered to prepare a report of such educational institutions which have zero enrolment. In this episode, 19 colleges were closed in the past. Now after getting the report from the Directorate of Education, the state government has closed these schools.
