Airbase, radar station… Myanmar engaged in rapid development near Andaman, what is the connection with China?

India-China News: Because of its expansionist policy, China, which is infamous all over the world, keeps on doing nefarious activities from time to time. China’s relations remain very bad not only with western countries including America, but also with India. Another mischief of China causing tension on LAC has been detected. Actually, Myanmar is engaged in various types of development on Coco Island. China can take advantage of this in the coming times. This island is close to India’s Andaman and Nicobar group of islands, due to which concerns are bound to increase. Satellite images captured by Maxar Technology in January this year clearly show the construction of two new hangars on Myanmar’s Coco Island, some buildings in the north, among others. In addition, a radar station is also visible.

The runway of the airbase built on Coco Island has also been extended. Now its length has been increased phenomenally to 2,300 metres, which was only 1,300 meters a decade ago. London-based think tank Chatham House has also published an article on this on its website along with various photographs. It is speculated that the Myanmar junta, colloquially known as the Tatmadaw, is preparing the islands for its covert maritime surveillance operations, often in collusion with China. The growing reliance of the junta on the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) soon after the coup is also adding to public concern. The last two years of civil war in Myanmar have isolated it internationally. Meanwhile, Beijing has made a major investment there through the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, showing proximity as a way to bypass the Malacca Straits to gain access to the Indian Ocean sea lanes.

On the other hand, according to a Reuters report, there has been a rapid increase in the installation of surveillance cameras manufactured by Chinese entities within densely populated cities of Myanmar. The reason behind this has been told that China tracks its citizens through it. If China’s presence on Cocoa Island improves, the Chinese military will gain a strategic advantage as it provides ample access to the vital Indian Ocean sea lanes. The ongoing development in Coco Island of Myanmar is going to alert India. There is also a fear that Myanmar can also be used by China to keep an eye on India’s Navy. Let us tell you that this Cocoa Island is only 55 kilometers away from the Andaman and Nicobar group of islands of India. There were also reports in the early 1990s that the Chinese military had installed a 45-50 meter antenna tower on Coco Island, equipped with signal intercept equipment.
