Who is Hati of Himachal Pradesh?

The people of Hati community are those who do the traditional work of selling vegetables, crops, meat or wool etc. in small markets called ‘Haats’ in towns. The men of the Hati community generally wear a white cap. These communities are inhabited by the Giri and Tons rivers in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and are also spread in the Jaunsar Bawar region. These were once part of the Sirmaur royal estate.

There is social, cultural as well as geographical similarity between the Hati community of Giripar region of Himachal and Jaunsari community of Jaunsar Bawar of Uttarakhand. The Jaunsar Bawar region has got the status of a tribe in 1968 itself. While the demand to declare the Giripar area as a tribal area and the Bhati community as a tribal community has been going on since then. Those who stayed in Himachal were not given equal status or benefits.

Now due to problems related to topography, people of this community living in Kamrau, Sangra and Shilia areas continue to face problems of education and employment. Just as there are Khaps in Haryana, the Hati community has a traditional council called Khumbali, which looks after the matters related to it. At present, a lot of Hati community lives in Sirmaur district.

Let us inform that the Hati community lives in four assembly constituencies of Sirmaur district, which include Shillai, Pawta Sahib, Renuka and Pachhad. Now about three lakh population of 154 panchayats of Trans Giri area will be benefited by this decision. Now BJP is expected to get a special advantage in these four seats and this decision can play an important role in the election result. Apart from these seats, it has an important role in many districts and it is believed that through these 9 seats can be targeted. Actually, now their almost 50 year old demand has been fulfilled.

Let us tell you that for the first time in the year 2009, the BJP recognized this demand by including it in its manifesto during the assembly elections and it became the first party to do so. It is said that the party also got the benefit of this and even after this many times BJP made it an issue. Then in the year 2014, the then National President of BJP had promised to give ST status to the Hatis during a rally in Nahan, Sirmaur. Due to this, the area considered to be a stronghold of Congress appeared to be coming in favor of BJP. In such a situation, after fulfillment of the promise, BJP can take advantage of it.
