Left home at the age of 9, fought for freedom and became the religious guru of Hindus

He was born in a Brahmin family on 2 September 1924 in Dighori village of Seoni in Madhya Pradesh. His father’s name was Dhanpati Upadhyay and mother’s name was Girija Devi. His parents named him Pothi Ram Upadhyay. Swaroopanand Saraswati, considered to be the greatest guru of Hindus, had left home at the age of just 9 and started the journey of religion.

During his religious journey, he reached Kashi and received the education of Vedas and scriptures from Swami Karpatri Maharaj. During the British era, at the age of 19, he was called a revolutionary sage. He came to be known by this name.

Fought freedom and spent 15 months in jail

Along with continuing his pilgrimage, Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati also fought for freedom. Due to his involvement in the movement against the British, he had to spend 9 months in Varanasi and 6 months in Madhya Pradesh jail. During this, he was also declared the president of Ram Rajya Parishad, the political party of Karpatri Maharaj.

Swami Swaroopanand became a sannyasi in 1950 and received the title of Shankaracharya in 1981. In 1950, Swami Brahmanand Saraswati, the Brahmalin Shankaracharya of Jyotishpeeth, who became famous by the name of revolutionary Sadhu, was initiated into penal-sannyasa. After this initiation he was known as Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. In this way he became the biggest religious teacher of Hindus.

He had also reprimanded the BJP and Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Ayodhya during the Ram temple movement. He said, BJP and VHP want to open their offices in the name of building a temple in Ayodhya, this is not acceptable at all. Shankaracharya is the biggest among Hindus, so we are the Supreme Court of Hindus. Some people want to give political color to the temple issue, this is not acceptable to us at all.

Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati celebrated his 99th birthday a week ago on 3rd September, the day of Hariyali Jeet. Many eminent personalities of the country including Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had congratulated him.

Was ill for a long time, had returned from Bangalore after getting treatment

He was ill for a long time. Recently, he had returned from Bangalore after getting treatment. On Sunday, he suffered a minor heart attack at Paramhansi Ganga Ashram at Jhoteshwar in Narsinghpur (MP) district. He breathed his last at 3.50 pm. According to disciple Brahm Vidyanand, Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati will be given samadhi in the ashram at 5 pm on Monday.
