UGC: More than 40 advertisements issued for the recruitment of professor, UGC NET, PhD not required

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has invited applications from experts in various fields for the recruitment of Professors of Practice (POP) in various universities and institutes to increase the number of them. They will be appointed soon in higher educational institutions. UGC Chairman M Jagadish Kumar said that through the recruitment of Professors of Practice, the Commission wants to bring industry and experts to educational institutions. More than 40 notifications for their recruitment have been issued on the Professor of Practice portal.

A few months ago, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had asked higher educational institutions across the country to take necessary steps to hire professionals and industry experts as “Professors of Practice” in their respective institutions. In fact, in the National Education Policy 2020, emphasis has been laid on linking higher education with skill best education. Therefore, UGC wants to improve its level by providing entry of practitioners, policy makers and skill professionals in higher education through POP. Professionals and industry experts from various fields will teach as professors.

Persons who have expertise in their particular profession with at least 15 years of service or experience will be eligible for ‘Professors of Practice’. As per University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, experts from fields such as engineering, science, media, literature, entrepreneurship, social sciences, fine arts, civil services and armed forces will be eligible for appointment under this category. For this, UGC NET or PhD degree is not required.

The POP contract may initially be for up to one year. The maximum period of service of a POP in an institution should not exceed three years and in exceptional cases it may be extended by one year. In no case should the total service period exceed four years.
