The government told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday that 2,63,913 posts of gazetted and non-gazetted cadre are currently vacant in the Indian Railways and filling up of vacancies is a continuous process. This information was given by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav in a written reply to a question by Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, M Selvaraj, Kaushalendra Kumar, PR Natarajan and Hibi Eden in the Lok Sabha. Members had asked whether the Government was aware of the acute shortage of staff in the Indian Railways? He had also sought details of vacant posts.
According to the data presented in the Lok Sabha by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, as on July 1, 2023, 2,680 posts of gazetted cadre and 2,61,233 posts of non-gazetted cadre are vacant in the Railways. He informed that recently a massive recruitment process has been completed for empanelment of 1,39,050 candidates by conducting computer based examination of about 2.37 crore candidates.
Vaishnav said that during the period from April 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023, 1,36,773 candidates have been empaneled under various posts of ‘Group C’, which includes 1,11,728 posts of protection category.
He informed that vacancy and filling up of posts in Indian Railways is a continuous process depending on its size, spatial distribution and operational importance. He said that the vacant posts are mainly filled by the Railways by giving indents to the recruiting agencies as per the operational requirement.
