Budget 2023: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a big announcement in the general budget for the financial year 2023-24, saying that in the next 3 years, 38,800 teachers and supporting staff will be recruited in 740 Eklavya schools of the country. 3.5 lakh tribal students are studying in these schools. Nirmala Sitharaman said that there has been a significant increase in the budget of Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) from Rs 1418.04 crore to Rs 581.96 crore. There was a budget of Rs 1418.04 crore in the year 2021, which was increased to Rs 2,000 crore in 2022-23. The scheme helps residential schools run for tribal students.
Let us tell you that in the budget session of the year 2018, former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had announced the plan to open Eklavya schools in tribal areas. Apart from providing education to tribal children in these schools, local art, culture, sports and skill development of the tribal area are promoted.
The government had informed in Parliament in December 2022 that 41 per cent posts (2,892) were lying vacant in Eklavya schools.
