Special Marriage Act: Muslim couple from Kerala remarried after 29 years, Islamic University issued fatwa, know why controversy is happening

Kerala Muslim Couple Remarries: A ‘unique’ wedding was witnessed in Kerala on International Women’s Day (8 March). Here in Kasargod district, a 29-year-old married Muslim couple got married once again. His three daughters and other family members were also present in this marriage. There is also a dispute regarding their marriage. The reason for the controversy is the Special Marriage Act.

Actually, in October 1994, lawyer C. Shukkur married Dr. Sheena. This marriage was done under Sharia law. According to Muslim personal law, daughters get only two-thirds of their father’s property. While the rest of the other part goes to his brothers. In such a situation, he wanted that only his daughters should get the share of all his earnings. That is why Shukkur and Sheena got married again under the Special Marriage Act.

Fatwa issued against Muslim couple

What did Shukkur say on the fatwa?

Explain that the Muslim Personal Law governs the succession of property. It says that daughters will only get two-thirds of their father’s property and the rest will go to her brothers. Shukkur has reacted to the fatwa. Shukkur said that his decision was not aimed at insulting any religious beliefs or breaking the morale of believers.

Famous sound designer Resul Pookutty congratulated both of them for their remarriage and said that this step of theirs is going to open the eyes of every liberal Muslim in the country. They said, "The step taken by him today is an eye opener for every liberal Muslim of this country. I was not present in his ‘second marriage’, but I am with him in this step."
