Sharad Pawar: ‘Can’t ignore Savarkar’s sacrifice, but…’, Sharad Pawar said amid controversy over Rahul Gandhi’s comment

Sharad Pawar On Vinayak Damodar Savarkar: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar said on Saturday (April 1) that Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (Vinayak Damodar Savarkar) One cannot ignore the sacrifices made for freedom, but disagreement with them should not be made a national issue as there are many more burning issues before the country today that need attention.

Defending Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has come under BJP’s target for allegedly speaking against India on foreign soil, Pawar said that he is not the first Indian who has spoken abroad on the issues of the country.

It is notable that Savarkar’s ‘insult’ is accused of doing. She is also taking out Savarkar Gaurav Yatra in his honour. The NCP chief said, ‘‘I would suggest that there is a need to reflect on where those who are currently in power are taking the country.’’

‘Can’t ignore Savarkar’s sacrifice’

Pawar said, ‘‘Savarkar is not a national issue today, it has become an old thing. We have said some things about Savarkar, but they are not personal. I was against the Hindu Mahasabha, but there is another side too. We cannot ignore the sacrifice made by Savarkar for the freedom of the country.’’

Savarkar’s progressive ideas

He said that about 32 years ago he talked about the progressive thoughts of Savarkar in the Parliament. Pawar said that Savarkar had built a house in Ratnagiri and had also built a small temple in front of it. Pawar told, ‘‘Savarkar had given the responsibility of worship in the temple to the person of Valmiki Samaj. I believe that was a very progressive thing.’’ The NCP leader said there was no need to emphasize Savarkar in the national narrative, especially when there are larger issues of concern to the common people.
