Meghalaya: Ruckus in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly over the Governor’s speech in Hindi, many MLAs walked out

Meghalaya Assembly Chaos: Heavy ruckus was witnessed during the speech of Governor Fagu Chauhan on the first day of the budget session in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly amid the ongoing tussle over Hindi language in different parts of the country. He was addressing the assembly in Hindi, which angered the MLAs of the Voice of the People’s Party (VPP).

Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma intervened, saying that the Governor’s translated speech had been distributed as he had certain limitations in reading English. However, VPP Speaker Ardent Basaiowmoit and three other party legislators staged a walkout from the House. Earlier, a heated argument was also witnessed between CM Sangma and Ardent. The ardent BasaiOvmoit said that Meghalaya is not a Hindi speaking state and the Governor’s speech in Hindi was against the sentiments of the people.

Kya Bole Ardent?

Ardent said in the assembly, ‘‘We are sent Hindi speaking governors. We do not understand what they are saying, so we are walking out.’’ While walking out of the House, he said, ‘‘We do not want to be a part of this proceedings and those who do not feel humiliated can sit in the House. We don’t want to be a part of it.’’ Opposition legislators insisted that the official language of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly be English. The legislators also said that the Center cannot impose Hindi on the people of Meghalaya.
