Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan became the second CDS of the country

New CDS Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired):  Nine months after the death of General Bipin Rawat, the government on Wednesday appointed Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) as the new Chief of Defense Staff. . Anil Chauhan has been the Commander of the Army’s Eastern Command, DGMAO of the country. These days he was posted as a military advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat.

Lt Gen Chauhan retired as the Chief of Eastern Command in May 2021. He has vast experience in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir and North East. The military post of CDS was vacant after the death of General Bipin Rawat.



India’s first Chief of Defense Staff General Rawat and his wife died after an army helicopter crashed in Tamil Nadu in December last year. A total of 13 people died in this accident. The sole survivor of the crash, an Air Force One Group Captain, later died of severe burns.

63-year-old General Rawat took over as India’s first Chief of Defense Staff in January 2020. The post was created to unite the three services – Army, Navy and Air Force. The Chief of Defense Staff is the permanent chairman of the Chief of Staff Committee and is also the chief military advisor to the Defense Minister in addition to providing impartial advice to the political leadership.
