Kerala Train Fire: The body of the father of a witness in the case of recent train arson incident in Kerala was found hanging from the gallows. This body was recovered from a hotel room in Kochi on Friday (May 19). A senior police officer gave this information. The officer said that 45-year-old Mohammad Shafiq was a resident of Delhi. He reached Kerala on May 16 to record his statement along with his son in connection with the train burning incident in Kozhikode in April.
According to the news agency PTI, the officer said, “Shafiq and his son had come to Kerala to record their statements in the train arson case. The process of recording the statement was completed and both were planning to return to Delhi but Shafiq’s son found him hanging in the bathroom of the hotel room.” The official said that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had summoned witnesses in connection with its investigation. Both the witnesses appeared before the NIA on 17 and 18 May.
The NIA’s Kochi unit recently took over the probe into the train arson case registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC), Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Railways Act and Explosive Substances Act.

Police suspect that the deceased may have either jumped or fallen from the train in an attempt to escape the fire. Investigation revealed that the accused Shahrukh Saifi, a resident of Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh, was later arrested.
