Why is Hindi Day celebrated?

14th September is the birthday of the great literary figure Vyohaar Rajendra Singh. He has contributed a lot in promoting the importance of Hindi language. Because of this, his birthday is celebrated as Hindi Day.

Hindi Divas History

Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language written in the Devanagari script. India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru decided to celebrate Hindi Divas on September 14 every year since 1949. Many cultural festivals are celebrated across the country on the occasion of Hindi Day. Hindi was recognized as an official language in the Constitution in 1949. Hindi is an important language among the 22 official languages ​​of India. 

Apart from Hindi Day, World Hindi Day is also celebrated on January 10. The first World Hindi Conference was held in Nagpur on 10 January 1975. In which 122 delegates from 30 countries participated. Since 2006, this day has been celebrated as World Hindi Day. Former Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh decided to celebrate World Hindi Day from 2006 to promote Hindi language worldwide.

Significance of Hindi Day

Hindi Day is celebrated to honor Hindi literature and to express love and respect for the Hindi language. Many cultural programs are organized on this day across the country. On Hindi Day, awards like Rajbhasha Kirti Award and Rajbhasha Gaurav Award are given to ministries, departments, public undertakings, national banks and citizens for their contribution to Hindi language.
