More warships to enter Indian Navy service Taragiri, the third warship of Project 17A, will be launched at Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) on Sunday. This will be another important milestone for MDL in the current financial year.
This warship is built using integrated construction method. This includes the construction of major parts (hull blocks) of the vessel at various geographical locations and assembly/installation at MDL. Taragiri was laid down on 10 September 2020 and is expected to be handed over to the Navy by August 2025. The design of this warship has been done by the Naval Design Bureau, a design organization under the Indian Navy. MDL is doing detailed design and construction under supervision of Warship Supervision Team (Mumbai)
149.02 meters long and 17.8 meters wide, the warship is powered by a CODOG combination of two gas turbines and 02 main diesel engines and is designed to achieve a speed of over 28 knots while displacing about 6670 tonnes. is done The steel used in the hull construction of the warship under Project 17A is indigenously developed DMR 249A, a low carbon micro alloy grade steel manufactured by Steel Authority of India (SAIL). This indigenously built stealth warship will have state-of-the-art weapons, sensors, advanced action information system, integrated platform management system, world-class modular living space, sophisticated power distribution system and many other advanced features. A missile system will be installed. The warship’s air defense capability, designed to counter the threat of enemy aircraft and anti-ship cruise missiles, is based on vertical launch i.e. air-to-air and long-range surface-to-air missile systems. Two 30 mm rapid fire guns will provide the warship with all-round defense capability while one SRGM gun will support the navy’s effective bombardment. Indigenously made triple tube weight light water cannon launchers and rocket launchers will add to the anti-submarine capability of the warship.
