‘2G scam was the most difficult case’, former CJI UU Lalit said – Supreme Court needs reform

Supreme Court: Former Chief Justice of India UU Lalit called the collegium system of the Supreme Court an ideal system. Defending the collegium system, he said that who can tell more accurately about the qualification and ability of a candidate? Someone who sits in Delhi or who is watching his performance at the grassroots level.

In the India Today Conclave, Justice UU Lalit, who was the 49th Chief Justice of India, openly spoke about the big and controversial cases fought in his career, from the bail formula instead of jail. Let us tell you that former CJI UU Lalit has been an excellent criminal lawyer and during this time has been seen arguing in cases like 2G scam.

2G scam was the toughest case – former CJI

Former CJI UU Lalit said in this program that the 2G scam case was the biggest case for him. He said that there was a lot of paperwork in the 2G scam case and dealing with it was the most difficult. The paperwork of the case ran into lakhs of pages and by the time we closed the case, statements of 150 witnesses had been recorded. Explain that the 2G scam was worth 1.76 lakh crores, in which politicians and government officials were involved.

Justice Lalit said this about the collegium system

Former Chief Justice UU Lalit said about the collegium system that there is nothing better than this system. Collegium system is an ideal system. He further added that judges are needed at all levels and the whole system is designed to bring out the best potential talent. 

Bail rule and jail exception

Last year, the Supreme Court had given a famous decision on separate bail law to prevent ‘rule of bail and jail should be exception’ and unnecessary arrests. On this, former CJI Lalit said that the decision to grant bail depends on the discretion of the judges. Another reason is the statutory provisions, which make it more difficult to grant bail. He said that allegations should not be made on the basis of any one case.

Justice UU Lalit is known in the Supreme Court for big decisions like constitution bench, live streaming, regular cases. He said that many reforms are still needed in the Supreme Court.
