The documentary claims to examine certain aspects of the riots. These riots took place after the Godhra train burning incident. Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat at the time of the incident. After the release of the documentary it was banned in India. Vipul Patel’s proposal was supported by BJP MLA Manisha Vakil, Amit Thackeray, Dhavalsingh Zala and minister Harsh Sanghvi.
Congress MLA was out of the house
The resolution was passed by voice vote in the absence of Congress MLAs as the party’s (Congress) MLAs were ousted from the House during the day. After passing the resolution with consensus, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Shankar Chowdhary said that the effort of BBC is condemnable. He said the House passed the resolution to convey its message to the Centre.
Patel said, ‘India is a democratic country and freedom of expression is the basic subject of its constitution, but it does not mean that a news media should misuse such freedom.’
‘BBC is losing credibility’
He said in the assembly, ‘If anyone behaves like this, it will not be taken lightly. BBC is losing its credibility and it seems that it is working with some hidden agenda against India and Indian Government. Therefore, this House requests the Central Government to take strict action against the BBC for the conclusions drawn in the documentary.
