Gauge change in Gir forest, electrification project suspended for not getting approval: Railways told court

Ahmedabad, Oct 12 (PTI) The Railways on Tuesday told the Gujarat High Court that it has been decided not to carry out gauge conversion and electrification for railway lines passing through Gir forest at present due to non-availability of necessary clearances.

In an affidavit filed before a division bench of Justices N V Anjaria and A P Thake, Divisional Railway Manager (Western Railway), Bhavnagar, Tarun Kumar said that the Railway Board has not received the approval from the State and National Boards for gauge conversion and gauge conversion in the Gir forest area. Electrification project has not been approved.

According to the affidavit, “Only the Railway Board can consider sanctioning the project after getting approval from the State Wildlife Board and the National Board for Wildlife. After due deliberations, Railway Board vide its letter dated 31st July, 2020 has decided that at present this project is not being operated.
