Viacom18 currently holds the digital streaming rights of IPL from 2023-27 as it signed a Rs 23,578 crore deal for the same. However, recent news suggests that Viacom18 may also offer a free-to-view option for digital streaming of IPL 2023. Looks like Jio Cinema has been given the right to stream IPL 2023 for free. This comes after the platform started live streaming the FIFA World Cup 2022 matches for free.
IPL has been telecasting live through Disney+ Hotstar for a long time now. And in 2018, Star India acquired the digital and TV rights for IPL for Rs 16,347 crore. However, from this year onwards, the rights for TV and digital were split separately, resulting in Star India losing the digital rights to Viacom18. However, the TV rights are still with Star India (will air on Star Sports channels).
Jio Cinema subscribers will increase from IPL 2023
In the Indian OTT segment, Disney+ Hotstar has recently become a significant player and has captured 50 percent market share due to IPL viewership. But with Jio Cinema reportedly set to stream IPL 2023 matches for free, we could see Hotstar losing around 15-25 million customers.
